Summer 2011 - Last week of June

After four days of rain and restocking the larder from the tiny but fabulous Saturday Farmers Market in Little Current, we headed off in brilliant sunshine to The Benjamin Group of Islands.  The scenery here, as in all of our province, is magnificent and the colourful granite and quartz contrasted with the trees, makes it very special.  These islands have been carved out by the ice age and left us with low, smooth as a baby's bottom islands as well as high ridges, covered in trees and more wild blueberry bushes than I have seen in my life.  Every American we encounter raves about our blueberries and we kind of nod vacantly, knowing how bloody long it takes to pick enough for a pancake breakfast.  Not any more!  These babies will be ripe in a couple of weeks and will definitely feed every boater who visits.  South Benjamin Island is definitely on our calendar as a revisit in a couple of weeks.

We arrived back in Little Current last evening, in time for Canada Day today.  Last year we spent the holiday in Sault Ste. Marie, a long way from where we are today.  There is a big lunch here today, provided by the church ladies with a HUGE price tag of $7.00.  Can you believe it?  I recall those dinners and prices at Teston United Church ....a long, long time ago.
Hey Darla, your painting in reverse!

I'm far behind because I'm picking out my new counter top...hmm, so much to choose from....

....this looks beautiful...oh wait...

gorgeous!  TOO much to choose from...

I think I'll just look at craters instead.  Must have been a meteorite..

The wonder of trees catching a foothold and growing in the most amazing places.  Note the little stand of birch further up the cliff

Meanwhile, Steve flew into Vancouver to visit Sidney, on his return from a business trip in Los Angeles. He is spending a few days there, Darla ferried across from the island to have a quick visit and he is also catching up with friends Claire, Ari, Sophia, Janet and Ray in Port Coquitlam. So nice that he is seeing Vancouver for the first time with his daughter!
